Coaching

Cricket coaching for players of all ages and abilities across Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey.

Best known for spin. Coaches every discipline.

What Raj coaches

Raj spent 18 years as a professional and 28 years coaching, most of it moving players along a pathway rather than fixing one shot. Sessions usually start with what a player is trying to do in a match, then work back to the technique that gets them there.

Batting

Set-up, balance and how a player scores — against pace, and against spin, which is where most junior batters lose their wicket and the thing Raj sees faster than anyone. Raj batted right-handed throughout his first-class career.

Spin bowling

The specialism. Grip, action, revolutions on the ball, and using flight and drift — the sideways movement a spun ball makes in the air before it lands — instead of just turning it off the pitch.

Seam bowling

Repeatable actions, wrist position and control. Raj coached seamers through the Hampshire pathway for eleven years alongside the spinners.

Fielding

Catching, ground fielding and throwing. Usually the quickest way for a junior to get picked, and the part almost nobody practises.

Game understanding

Reading a match, setting a field, knowing when to attack and when to hold. For captains especially, this is often worth more than another net.

Sessions and prices

One-to-one coaching starts at £60 an hour. The rate can be discussed based on location and number of sessions, so Raj will confirm a price with you before anything is booked. Nothing is charged until you have agreed it.

  • One-to-one

    From £60 an hour

One player, one coach, one thing to work on. Most players start here, whether they are eight and new to it or playing county age group. The rate can be discussed based on location and number of sessions.

Raj coaches players from eight years old upwards.

  • Small groups

    Price on enquiry

Two to six players. Works well for team-mates, siblings and friends who want the same session at a lower cost each.

  • Video analysis

    From £40

Remote coaching. Film the action, send it over, and a written report comes back with the drills and exercises to work on. No travel for anybody.

Squad sessions, winter nets, and support for your own coaches. Raj ran county age-group programmes for Hampshire and was Director of Cricket at Lancing College.

What happens in a first session

Raj looks at four things: technique, tactical awareness — knowing what to do and when — the physical side, and the mental side.

Before any of that, he looks at whether the action is safe. A young bowler with a poor action will get injured sooner or later, and no amount of anything else matters more than that.

Where sessions take place

If none of that is practical, video analysis works from anywhere — the player films their action, Raj analyses it and sends back a report with drills.

Regular venues are Bat 360 in Fareham, Waterlooville Cricket Club, Havant Cricket Club and Square 1 in Brighton. Raj also coaches at other clubs, schools and grounds, and is happy to travel — if you have somewhere to work, he will come to you.
